The Lubwe Mission Medical Project is a non-profit organisation founded in 2005 by Joan Somers-Meaney & Dr.Sheila O'Sullivan.

How it all began:

The connection was made in the 1970's when Joan went to work in the Lubwe Mission Hospital in Northern Zambia as part of her nursing training. She spent two years working there and ever since she left Lubwe she often wondered how the people of Lubwe and the hospital were doing.

In 2005 she decided to return to Lubwe.By  the wonders of the world wide web she made contact with some members of the White Fathers order of the priesthood who she worked with all those years ago in Zambia, and the wheels were set in motion.

Joan and her colleague Dr. Sheila O'Sullivan set off on a Journey back to Lubwe. When they arrived in Lubwe in the rural northern corner of Zambia, Joan was horrified to see that in the 30 years since she worked there, almost nothing had changed. The hospital equipment, buildings, furniture, beds, blankets, matresses even the paint on the walls was the same as 30 years ago.

On returning to Ireland, Joan & Sheila set about fundraising for the Lubwe Mission Hospital, and thus the Lubwe Mission Medical Project was founded.

Project Aims:

The lubwe Mission Medical Project focuses primarily on improving the conditions in the Lubwe Mission hospital drawing on the knowledge and experience of Joan & Sheila's professional lives in the medical profession. The project is also linked to the Lubwe Primary School and an associated Orphanage in Lusaka Mulele Mwana.
